PRESS RELEASE: Pop For Change Mobilizes Over 500 Volunteers For
Four Mid-coast Charities.

April 22, 2014

Bettina Doulton and Lani Stiles announced today that their Pop For Change initiative has exceeded its goal of mobilizing 400 volunteers to donate their time to four mid-coast charities. The initiative, which came to be through the reinvention of Cellardoor Winery’s and Megunticook Market’s annual Pop The Cork event, was created to bring like-minded individuals together who want to do more for their community.

“We are overwhelmed and humbled by the enthusiasm shown for Pop For Change,” said Bettina Doulton owner of Cellardoor. “So many people stepped forward, our charitable partners have all the help they need and we are no longer recruiting volunteers. It’s truly an incredible outpouring of support,” she added.

“When we decided to recast our Pop The Cork event, we wanted to focus on the organizations who benefit from the money raised,” said Lani Stiles proprietor of Megunticook Market. “That’s where the idea for Pop For Change came from and we are grateful to all the individuals and companies who have stepped forward. The fact that we had to stop recruiting volunteers is truly a blessing,” she continued

More than 2,000 hours of time have been donated to United Mid-Coast Charities, MCH Meals on Wheels, Coastal Opportunities, and Hospitality House. And it’s not just individuals volunteering, area businesses like Frost & Bryant, Horch Roofing, Evergreen Home Performance, Bangor Savings Bank, Midcoast Masonry, Mt. Battie Car Wash, and Allen Insurance & Financial formed volunteer teams for Pop For Change.

While volunteers are no longer needed, the public can still cast their votes to determine which of the four organizations noted will receive $100,000  and which will get $20,000 at the sold out Pop The Cause on June 26. Votes can be cast at www.PopForChange.com.

PRESS RELEASE: Announcing Our 2014 Pop the Cause Beneficiaries

November 4, 2013

The four local nonprofits that will benefit from next spring’s Pop the Cause party are United Mid-Coast Charities, Knox County Meals on Wheels, Coastal Opportunities, and Hospitality House.

“The selection process was extremely difficult as there are so many deserving organizations in our area,” says Cellardoor Winery’s Bettina Doulton, who presents the very popular annual fundraiser party in partnership with Lani Stiles of Megunticook Market.

“We were drawn to these four organizations because they work directly in our towns to improve the lives of our neighbors,” explains Stiles. “We’re excited that Pop the Cause will provide a way for everyone who attends to give directly back to this community.”

United Mid-Coast Charities donates 100% of the funds it raises to about 50 nonprofit agencies that benefit Knox and Waldo county residents in need. Founded in 1942, it focuses on charities that provide medical or educational services, community service organizations, and those that work with children and youth. Knox County Meals on Wheels currently delivers more than 100 hot meals five days a week to older adults and disabled individuals. It also provides community lunch sites for seniors in Rockland and Camden.

Coastal Opportunities, formerly known as The Coastal Workshop, operates day and residential programs at 11 local facilities for over 100 developmentally disabled adults, providing an environment in which they can feel challenged, be successful, and improve their self-esteem. Hospitality House, the area’s only homeless shelter, closed unexpectedly last November. Its parent organization, the Knox County Homeless Coalition, is making major efforts to re-open its doors, offer 24-hour access, and help people find stable housing. Additional services, provided through collaborating partners, may include education or training, food security, and medical and mental health resources.

Previously called Pop the Cork, the annual gala was begun in 2008 as a festive way to support local nonprofits. Past beneficiaries are the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Bay Chamber Concerts, United Mid-Coast Charities, Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, and the Penobscot Bay YMCA.

Doulton and Stiles announced recently that next spring’s Pop the Cause will place the emphasis squarely on the spirit of community giving. A donation of $160,000 will be divided among the four selected nonprofits; three will receive $20,000 each, while the fourth will receive $100,000. The plan for choosing which of the four will receive the $100,000 is currently being finalized.

Pop the Cause will take place in a large tent on Rockport Harbor on Thursday, June 26, 2014. The Pointer Sisters will perform, along with a variety of other musical entertainment. In past years, headliners have included Huey Lewis and the News, Boyz II Men, and Foreigner. Tickets always sell out months in advance, and this year is no exception, as all 400 were snapped up on November 1, the first day they were offered.

And apparently we weren’t the only ones who were excited. We just got news that some of our wines received some pretty stellar ratings at the 2013 San Diego International Wine Competition.

Camden and Rockland also got some love, as did Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Bar Harbor and Portland.

The Barbera Vinegar Has Arrived!

December 10, 2012

You’ve probably heard us talk about it, and we can’t help but be excited: our Barbera Red Wine Vinegar is finally here!

When you are a small winery in Maine, it’s hard to let a grape go unused. But the lengthy commute from the West Coast (from where many of our grapes are being brought in) can take a toll on the fruit. In the spirit of Maine resourcefulness and ingenuity, we have repurposed the Barbera grapes that were not ideal for winemaking to bring you this red wine vinegar. Bright, fruity and acidic, Barbera Vinegar remains true to the grapes of its namesake. It is delicious drizzled over fresh tomatoes or as a tasty addition to your favorite vinaigrette.

We are selling the Barbera Vinegar at both our Villa in Rockport (open Thursdays-Sundays, 12-5PM) and at our Barn in Lincolnville (open 7 days a week through 12/31/12, 11AM-6PM). If you’d like to have the vinegar shipped, please give us a call at (207) 763-4478!

We’re a Down East Reader’s Choice Winner!

October 27, 2012

We’re feeling super blessed these days, being the caretakers of this beautiful barn, property and business. It makes it that much sweeter when others reach out to tell us how much they love it here. It makes us smile knowing that they feel the same way that we do about this place. That said, finding out that we were awarded the 2012 Down East Readers’ Choice award felt really good. It makes us proud and also makes us feel that we must be doing something right.

Cellardoor Wines to Be Featured in Cook-off

October 19, 2012

It’s time to get our game faces on (and, no, we’re not talking about football). Four Top Chefs will go head-to-head for the title of Maine’s Best Farm-to-Table Restaurant and we’re thrilled to have a special part in it! Chef Shannon Bard of Zapoteca Restaurant will be featuring our wines to be paired with her award-winning dishes (not that we’re playing favorites). The competition will be held at Portland’s Harvest on the Harbor event at the end of October and the lineup will also feature Chef Jeff Landry of The Farmer’s Table, Chef Eric Flynn of The Harraseeket Inn, and Chef Kevin Walsh of Earth at Hidden Pond. Check out the Harvest on the Harbor website for more information. Good luck, chefs, and we can’t wait to hear all about it!

Stay Tuned For Our Cellar Series!

October 5, 2012

An undisclosed date. A secret location. Delicious food and fabulous wine. Sound intriguing? While we can’t dish on all of the details just yet, we’ve got some exciting things planned for next year. Case in point: our new Cellar Series is an exclusive series of underground gourmet dinners created for those who prefer to dine with a little adventure and mystery on the side. Stay tuned as we will be releasing more details in the future!

Gearing Up For VinFest

August 31, 2012

As summer comes to a close, we prepare to say goodbye to the endless days of warm weather (and we’ve had a good string of them this year) and welcome in those cool, crisp days of autumn. It’s always a little bittersweet, but we’ve got a couple of things on our minds that keep us filled to the brim with excitement: a late-September harvest and VinFest. It’s hard to believe that it’s less than a month away until our 1920′s jazz age-inspired Harvest weekend is here. Friday night kicks everything off with a dinner/dance featuring music from Jesse Campbell of NBC’s The Voice and The Commodores on September 28, followed by our family-friendly harvest festival on Saturday, September 29, and ending with The Gatsby Affair to benefit the Bay Chamber on Sunday, September 30. And apparently we’re not the only ones who are getting excited. Our friends over at The Free Press and The Examiner have been drumming up some serious anticipation. For those of you who have joined us in the past and those who are joining us for the very first time, we can’t wait to celebrate with you! For more information or to participate in one or more of these events, please give us a call at the Winery at 207-763-4478.

Another Reason to Drink Cellardoor Wine (Not That You Need One…)

August 21, 2012

by Richard Ross

Wine made from blackberries and blueberries could help diabetics to
control their blood glucose levels, say researchers.
Scientists from the University of Illinois have found that the
berry-based wines contain high levels of beneficial bioactive
components that were almost as effective as the anti-diabetes drug

The researchers said that the carbohydrate-degrading enzymes,
alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase, were inhibited by a
blueberry-blackberry wine blend.

The team also found high levels of antioxidants, polyphenols and
anthocyanins in the wines, and are now hoping to create a
dealcoholised fruit drink from the wine, which maintains the
effectiveness of the beneficial components, and helps reduce blood
sugar levels in diabetics.
